10 excellent reasons to buy from TEMU

Why does TEMU seem so appealing? While pondering this question, I made a list of 10 points that reveal its magic. (Spoiler: it has nothing to do with quality)

  1. Because you need 14 new phone cases - right now. Of course, you'll only use one of them (so if it's what you ordered and not, for example, a shoe sole, you'll get it intact in your mailbox and you'll get it intact in place), but hey, freedom of choice is important!
  2. Because why support a Finnish entrepreneur when you can send your money to the other side of the world? Local makers will do just fine, right? Heh, except not if no one appreciates craftsmanship or actually usable products anymore.
  3. Because what could brighten up your day better than a plastic object whose function is a complete mystery. You don't know what it does, but it cost €0.79 and it has glitter in it. Perfect!
  4. Because you love surprises. You order a yellow bag, you might get a green one. Or a doorknob (but that was exactly what you needed). TEMU keeps the excitement going!
  5. Because the environment is overvalued. What could be more wonderful than watching each little package fly alone from the other side of the world?
  6. Because you want to live on the edge (on the edge of warranty issues). If the product breaks, you can always write a message to customer service and get an automatic response in Chinese. It's almost like a replacement.
  7. Because your home isn't quite full of stuff yet. There's still room for one more silicone banana peel. Or three.
  8. Because the dopamine rush from shopping is cheaper than therapy. It doesn't matter what you buy, as long as buying feels good for a moment. (Well-being in a plastic bag)
  9. Because a "durable product" means it will last at least a postal journey. Sometimes even a day's use! Quality is just a matter of attitude.
  10. Because critical thinking is so 2020s. If everyone else can do it, why not me? Yes, mass-produced plastic makes you happy for at least 10 seconds.

Or then...

We could stop for a moment and choose differently. Buy something that lasts, feels good, and supports real people - not algorithms.

Less stuff. More meaning - The most beautiful counter-movement to plastic and mass production.

10 facts about TEMU

  1. Temu is a Chinese online store. TEMU is part of the international PDD Holdings group, which is based on mass production and low prices. Its goal is to get people to buy as much as possible.
  2. A cheap price doesn't come out of nowhere. If a product costs a euro, somewhere in the world someone is paying more for it: with their time, their health, or the environment.
  3. TEMU encourages impulse purchases. TEMU's app is built to be addictive: discounts, counters, and offers that make us act quickly. It gives us the feeling that we have "found a treasure," even though in reality we are filling our homes with things we don't need.
  4. Most products are disposable . Many products purchased from TEMU break down before they can be properly used. Quality is not the main thing, but quantity.
  5. TEMU does not support local entrepreneurs . Every TEMU purchase takes money away from Finnish makers. When we choose a domestic product, the money stays in Finland - to support Finnish work.
  6. Every small package puts a strain on the environment. The carbon footprint of millions of small packages grows enormous as they are flown around the world. The cheap price hides the emissions and waste of resources during transportation.
  7. TEMU is changing the way we consume. Buying cheaply and quickly becomes normal. Buying quickly is a habit, not a necessity. This is taking us further and further away from the idea that things have meaning or are long-lasting.
  8. Responsibility disappears with the mass. When products come from different sellers and different countries, the consumer's legal protection is weak. Warranties and chains of responsibility are difficult to trace, and broken products often end up straight in the trash.
  9. TEMU's popularity is a mirror for us. TEMU wouldn't be popular if we didn't want fast and cheap. But maybe together we can change direction - slow down, appreciate and choose differently.
  10. Every euro is a vote. When you buy from TEMU, you vote for cheap production. When you buy from a Finnish small entrepreneur, you vote for fair work, quality and transparency.
