Why handmade products?
In this blog post, I want to shed some light on why I have chosen handmade products for my online store and debunk the most common misconceptions about handmade products.
Why handmade products?
A handmade product is more than a product or an object. It carries the handprint of the maker and Handmade products have something that mass production cannot offer: Humanity, stories and meaning. Every handmade product is unique, born with time, with thought and shaped by the hands of its creator. When you choose a handmade product, you also choose a value that will not disappear in an instant. The product is made to last and serve for a long time - it is a protest against the disposable culture.
For me, craft is also a way to cherish traditions that are easily lost in the hustle and bustle of mass production. It is a choice for sustainability, meaning and what is made with heart .
I want to be part of raising the appreciation of craftsmanship. Handmade = time, skill and heart that deserves to be seen and appreciated.
Handmade - myth or truth?
Myth 1: "Handmade is too expensive"
Handmade often costs a little more because it takes time, quality materials, and care. It lasts longer and reduces disposable use. Handmade is good for both your wallet and nature in the long run.
Myth 2: "Handmade products are not finished enough"
Small differences indicate genuine craftsmanship, but the products are carefully finished. Sustainable craftsmanship reduces waste and is an ecological choice.
Myth 3: "Handmade is old-fashioned"
Handicraft is tradition, but also modern design and sustainable consumption. Many craft entrepreneurs combine traditional skills with new forms and needs, creating products that are suitable for today and the future.
Myth 4: "There's no need for handmade when machines can do the same thing"
A machine can make a product, but it cannot give it meaning. A handmade product has a story, a touch of the maker's hand and a feeling woven into it. That makes the product personal and unique - something that a machine can never replicate.
Handmade is not just an alternative to mass production, but a conscious choice: It values time, skill, durability and meaning. When you buy a handmade product, you don't just get an object - you get a small piece of tenderness and a story for your own everyday life.
Myth 5: "Handmade = DIY (Do It Yourself)"
DIY refers to hobby-based making, meaning that everyone can try and learn on their own. Handmade, on the other hand, means that the product is made with professional skill, consideration, and often extensive experience.
When we talk about handmade in the context of Maallinen Design, we mean finished, high-quality products that reflect the maker's expertise, careful selection of materials, and aesthetic eye. Handmade is unique, durable, and valuable. Much more than DIY.
